Sony now says the service is back up and running normally.
According to the official AskPlayStation twitter account, PSN is back up.

Sony’s PlayStation Network Service is currently experiencing issues, with some users unable to login. PlayStation posted on its official Twitter account that it was investigating the issues.

Prior to the announcement, hacker group Lizard Squad claimed that it had brought the service offline, tweeting “PSN Login #offline #LizardSquad”
Similarly, a few days ago the group claimed responsibility for bringing Microsoft’s Xbox Live service to a halt on the Xbox 360.
